Politics and Defence spending is always linked. It is just that the first 12 months of the Abbott government forgot that politics is the 'art of the possible' and came up with a lot of policies(take you pick) that it did not have the numbers to implement.
The result is what you see. It charged the barricades on numerous issues and has been forced in back down after back down. This morning's being Defence force pay, probably justified, but another $200M to find over the forward estimates..
None of this addresses the basic problem that Australia is simply spending beyond its means. In this regard it is worth remembering that spending on importing Defence equipment adds nothing to the domestic economy and for a country with both government and trade deficits simply adds dollar for dollar to foreign debt.
